The Small/Sock size allows 'Large' gauged tips to fit on 'Small' cables. They will also add an extra inch length to your needle/join.
FAQ: What if I want to use a Small tip on a Large cord? These will not work! No needle manufacturer makes an adapter that will let you fit a smaller tip on a larger cord - as that would cause an unusable hump where the needle meets the cable.
