Opal Yarns Hundertwasser 4 Ply

From bright to dark-colored - the wide array of patterns in these collections leave nothing to be desired. Opal has released three different Hundertwasser-inspired collections over the years, and the yarns included here are a mix from the three that we were able to find! 

Friedrich Stowasser, better known by his pseudonym Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser, was an Austrian-born New Zealand visual artist and architect who was passionate about environmental activism. Despite passing away in 2000, we like to think he would be very pleased with all of the funky, sustainable socks knitters are making, from colours inspired by his paintings!

With the purchase of the Opal Schafpate collection, you support German migrant sheep farming and promote the maintenance of the landscape of the unique Swabian Alb. The program also involves people personally sponsoring sheep in return for a yearly gift and an invitation to visit the herd in person. You can find photos from the farm on Opal's website here.

As of August 2020, over 131,000 has been distributed to German shepherds as part of this program.

For more than 15 years, Opal has been making a Rainforest collection, with part of the proceeds from each collection going to a NPO called Rainforest Rescue. Since 2005 €230,000 has been donated.

6 Ply is a thicker weight sock yarn than 4 Ply - these balls come in a larger 150g format, which many knitters find provide them with enough for two pairs of socks, depending on their tension and the sock size. Also makes incredibly cute baby sweaters!
